About Blanche Fischer and Her Legacy
Blanche Fischer was a woman of great character—dedicated, pragmatic, and delightfully irreverent, with a sharp wit that could brighten any room. As Sue Jenkins, former Library Director, fondly remembered, Blanche was a frequent visitor to the library, always bringing her humor, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to improving the world around her.
Though Blanche left us on May 8, 1980, her legacy continues to shape lives. In 1981, the Blanche Fischer Foundation was established from a trust she carefully crafted. Inspired by her one-armed mechanic, Blanche envisioned a Foundation that would empower Oregonians with permanent physical disabilities. The Foundation provides assistance to address specific needs related to disabilities or to help foster independence and greater opportunities.
Blanche’s influence extended beyond the Foundation she created. She played an instrumental role in the formation of the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF), a lasting testament to her vision and foresight.
Through her pioneering spirit and compassion, Blanche Fischer left an indelible mark on Oregon. Her legacy is a living testament to the power of resilience, vision, and a generous heart.
